The mariachi trumpets really do not fit in the Cash version. I heard he added them because he or June Carter had a dream that they should be there. Ray put a slightly different slant on the song.
Let me just correct myself: The Acid Drinkers version sucks ass!
At first I liked the army drum intro and the speed. Then I heard it again and got really annoyed with how many basic mistakes they make. The drummer is really bad at keeping the beat and the rythm, and the rest of the band miss the tune at several spots.

Different as to the meaning, not the mood, like the other artists covering.
Johnny had the dream.
Yes, bastin, you are right.
Ray saying "Your ring of fire," is much different than "A ring of fire."
This is a song that needs to be performed with an edge. Like most of the songs by Cash do.
The slow versions just don't do it, and Ray Charles seems oddly out of place here.
The rest are okay. But Johnny Cash is the only one who can perform this song and make it sound credible.
And I totally agree - the mariachi adds that little extra.
